Introduction

I arrived early this morning to El Salvador disguised as an exhausted 4th year medical student. My first week in El Salvador will be spent exploring the area of San Salvador and researching the etiologies and presentations of common tropical diseases. At the beginning of next week, I begin work at the Zacamil Hospital in San Salvador, where I will be working on an international internal medicine rotation for medical school as well as researching and studying for my Masters of Public Health.

My first few posts will be dedicated to summaries of differing types of infectious disease endemic to the area followed by posts regarding my encounters with infectious disease at Zacamil Hospital as well as any other public health issue that may catch my attention. My intention is to gather both literary knowledge and field experience with local tropical diseases in hopes of creating educational materials that might be used here by the hospital or government to educate the population on infectious disease (what it is, how to avoid it, what to do when you get it, how to tell you have it, etc, etc). In addition, my experiences will be summarized in a narrative style research paper and submitted for publishing.

I´d like to give special thanks to the Salvadoran Ministry of Health and Zacamil Hospital for their generosity and benevolence.
